6 Secrets to Creating the Perfect Book Title

Coming up with a title can be one of the most stressful tasks of writing a book. Some writers have had their book title in mind for years before they have even written one word. Many writers, however, run into a roadblock and find that coming up with a title can put the writing process on hold.  Try these seven secrets to ensure your book has the perfect name

1. Brainstorm

To avoid frustration, do not overthink the title by trying to come up with one ideal option. It is best to brain dump at least one page full of choices, then compare and contrast to narrow the titles down to a few that you like. You can also use a few of the ideas to get feedback from peers or your publisher.

2. Check your bookshelf.

Grab a few of your favorite books and think about what made you pick them up from a bookstore or online in the first place. Why did these titles stand out? You should not copy them, but maintain the perspective of the reader while creating a title of your own.

3. Remember your target audience.

Your book’s name should appeal to its audience. Consider who will be reading this book when you determine the title. For example, a book title may use more feminine wording, scientific wording, or motivational wording. The target reader should be reflected in the words, the font, and the cover design.

4. Make it original.

Make sure to do your research. You do not want a book title that is the same or even similar to another. Even if it is similar to a song or movie title, it could easily get mixed up. Your title should be unique, without being overcomplicated and difficult to remember.

5. Keep it clear and simple.

A title can be mysterious, but it should not be confusing. A quick glimpse of the title will be enough to grab a reader’s attention if it is clear and straightforward. A book can be lengthy, but when it comes to a title, less is more. Keep in mind that books are often referred through word-of-mouth recommendations and book lists, so the title should be easy to grasp.

6. Write.

If you find yourself stumped with a name for a title, keep working on the book. Titles are more likely to pop into your head as you write than if you are focusing your energy thinking of the perfect name.

A great title matters

While the content in the book is more valuable, having a greattitle is critical. The title of a book is essentially marketing that grabs the attention of potential readers. The writing inside may be phenomenal, but no one will ever get the chance to read it if the title turns them away.
